Our new release is a tribute to the Original Aurora AFX Starburst Nomads. Released by AFX around 1974 - Product 1903 - they were part of a large lineup of Nomads that AFX released in many color variations. They were released on the new Magna-Traction AFX chassis. The Starbursts have become particularly collectible and do not show up for sale very often.

After AFX was purchased by TOMY Company, Ltd., they continued the Nomad with the same AFX Mold & Tooling to produce 3 versions of the Nomad starting in 1993. They also produced the Crash’N Smash’N Hot Rods based on the ‘57 Nomad, but because of the special effects built into the body they do not look like or have the traditional style lines of the other slot car bodies.

Around 2001 Johnny Lightning/Playing Mantis started making Slot Car bodies on Pullback chassis “ThunderJets” that could be used on AFX chassis and they made several color variations available. When Johnny Lightning began making complete Slot Cars (Body with a Chassis) some of them were 1957 Chevy Nomads.

Then in 2008, Auto World released their version of the Starburst Nomad in both the Red/White and Orange/Yellow versions. These are not rare but can be hard to find.

Tyco was also in the Chevy Nomad arena. Starting in 1976, Tyco released their version of the Nomad which was based on the 1955 Model Year instead of the 1957 body style. The Tyco Nomads are also very popular among collectors, particularly the Tilt-Nose version.

Life Like Slot Cars also made a few 1957 Nomads, mostly as Set Cars, from the “Snap’on Glo-Mad” set and the “Classic ‘57’s" set. No surprise, these cars are also sought after and do not come up for sale all that often.

The Chevy Nomad has endured as a symbol of mid-century American automotive design and its presence in the Slot Car world reflects its cultural impact. The Nomad’s distinctive look, a two-door station wagon with a long history of Hot Rodding and Customizing, have kept their popularity alive on the Slot Car Track as well as your local Cars & Coffee meet-ups.

Have we left out any other slot car manufacturers that made a 1955-1957 Chevy Nomad from our list? If so, please let us know in the comments and let us and our readers know what else is out there.
